Don Cossack Cavalry Regiment 5



 










The Don Cossacks had historically been retained by the Tsars to provide bodyguards and light cavalry regiments to defend the motherland. Notably the Don Cossacks had served in the Napoleonic wars ultimatly harrassing the French to the gates of Paris during Napoleons retreat from Moscow. In the Crimean war, the Don Cossacks repelled the infamous charge of the light brigade. This Fierce and proud people remained loyal to the Tzar until the end of the Russian Revolution when the White Army were defeated. The Don Cossacks served the soviet regime until 1941 when, after years of repression and religious persecution they greeted the invading German foces as liberators. The opportunity was seized to regain their freedom by enlisting into the Werhmacht Cavalry.

The Don Cosacks were unique in that they retained their commanding officer Major Kononov who was the only serving Russian to command a Cavalry regiment in the Werhmacht. The Don Cossack Cavalry Regiment 5.
